Created in 1903, the Tour de France is now an unmissable sporting event. In 2020, Nice has organised the big start; the occasion for the passionate or curious public to discover cities like Eze (very close to Monaco) or Villefranche-sur-Mer along the French Riviera coast and the hinterland of Nice and its postcard-worthy villages.

The stages of the Tour de France 2020

The Tour de France is the annual summer event for cycling enthusiasts. In 2020, exceptionally, it could not take place in July due to the health crisis caused by the coronavirus. The 107th edition of this extraordinary event has been postponed and launched on August 29th in Nice. Objective for the 176 riders participating in this Tour de France 2020? To reach the capital on September 20th, after a 3484 km course divided into 21 stages. The 20 teams of 8 riders have thus faced 9 flat stages, 3 hilly stages and 8 mountain stages with 4 high altitude finishes. This sporting and popular exploit attracted 10 million spectators along the roads of France, who came to applaud and encourage the cyclists in a unique atmosphere. The Tour de France criss-crosses the towns and villages of France and thus gives its French and foreign public the opportunity to discover the exceptional landscapes and heritage of our territory.

The route of the Tour de France 2020 starting from Nice

This is the second time that the capital of the Côte d’Azur has organised the big start of the Tour de France since 1981. At the end of August 2020, the start and the finish of the first two stages took place in Nice and its Promenade des Anglais. Thanks to the Tour de France, Nice and the hinterland have been well highlighted, with cities transformed to welcome this prestigious race. Between land and sea, the cyclists rode tens of kilometres through the hinterland of Nice and passed through typical villages like Peira Cava, Lucéram, L’Escarène, etc. The course offered spectacular views, in particular during the mountain stage with the col de Nice, then the col de Turini and the col d’Eze that joins the Principality of Monaco.

Staying on a campsite during the Tour de France

Walking the roads to follow the Tour de France, taking part in this national sporting event, also means taking advantage of the stage locations to discover the local heritage, culture and gastronomy. And to do so, nothing better than staying at a campsite. In the South, this allows you to take the time to enjoy the treasures and charm of the Mediterranean coast and the hinterland of Nice.
Second tourist pole of the country, Nice is a city of the Alpes-Maritimes not to be missed. It notably has a remarkable religious heritage. Villefranche-sur-Mer is another joyful seaside town: this city with colourful facades shelters one of the most important ports of the French Riviera but also a 16th century citadel. Further afield, Eze is a picturesque seaside resort to visit for its ruined castle which houses an exotic garden. Opting for camping in Villefranche-sur-Mer or camping in Eze also means being able to try out water sports: sailing, scuba diving, water skiing… On the land side, nature lovers can walk or cycle along the hiking trails while staying at a campsite in Nice or nearby.
